Guapimirim

Coordinates: 22°32′13″S 42°58′55″W / 22.53694°S 42.98194°W / -22.53694; -42.98194 Guapimirim (Portuguese pronunciation: [ˈɡwapiˈmiɾĩ], from Tupi 'little spring', guapi 'spring', mirim 'little'), is a municipality located in the Brazilian state of Rio de Janeiro. Its population was 51,487 (2010) and its area is 361 km².[1] Guapimirim is a Brazilian city in the metropolitan area of the state of Rio de Janeiro. It's north of the capital of this state of about 84 kilometers. It is located at 22 ° 32'14 "south latitude and 42 º 58'55" west longitude at an altitude of 48 meters. It occupies an area of 360,813 km ² and its population in 2010 was estimated by the IBGE in 51,487 [2] inhabitants, making it the 37th most populous municipality in the state of Rio de Janeiro. The municipality is located in a valley formed by the base of the Finger of God - the Organ Mountains, and borders the municipalities of: Teresópolis and Petrópolis (north), Itaboraí (south), Waterfalls Macacu (east) and Mage and funds Guanabara Bay (west). Seventy percent of its territory is in the area of environmental protection. Together with the municipalities of Petrópolis, Teresópolis, Freiburg, Mage, Sao Jose do Rio Preto Valley, Three Rivers, Commander Levy Gasparian, Areal and Waterfalls Macacu Guapimirim make up the tourist region of Rio de Janeiro called Imperial Green Mountain. The peak Finger of God, an important tourist symbol of the state, is located within the territorial area of the municipality.
