Grey Street (Road)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Aurobinda Sarani (originally Grey Street) is one of the oldest roads in Kolkata.

This road joins Acharya Prafulla Chandra Rd (Upper Circular Rd) with Rabindra Sarani (Chitpur Rd). It originates at Ultadanga, known as Ultadanga Main Road. It changes to Aurobinda Sarani at Khanna Cinema crossing, A. P. C. Road, continues eastwards, crossing Bidhan Sarani, Jatindra Mohan Avenue and changes into Shobhabazar Street at Rabindra Sarani Crossing. This is a very busy road, consisting of one of Kolkata's biggest markets, the Hatibagan Market, at Bidhan Sarani Crossing.

Buses, autos and taxis use the road. Tram] service operates from Hatibagan, Bidhan Sarani to Rabindra Sarani, along two routes (No. 4 Belgacchia- B.B.D. Bag via chitpur & No. 10 Shyambazar- B.B.D. Bag via chitpur).

The road crosses Arobindo Setu Bridge, over one of Kolkata's canals. The bridge is poorly maintained and many drivers prefer a small, new bridge close-by. It is one of Kolkata's most congested main roads.
