Gregory Vajda

Gregory Vajda (born Vajda Gergely, August 13, 1973)^{[citation needed]} is a Hungarian clarinetist, composer and conductor.

Early life and education

He was born in Budapest in 1973 to bassoonist József Vajda (born 1947) and operatic soprano Veronika Kincses.^{[citation needed]} After attending the Béla Bartók Secondary School, where he learned to compose and play the clarinet, he studied conducting at the Franz Liszt Academy of Music with Ervin Lukács.^{[citation needed]}

Career

Conducting

Vajda has been resident conductor of the Oregon Symphony, based in Portland, Oregon, since 2005; the 2012–2013 season marks his last with the orchestra.^[1]

In 2008, Vajda was one of eight finalists chosen for the position of music director of the Fort Wayne Philharmonic Orchestra in Fort Wayne, Indiana.^{[citation needed]}

In 2009, Vajda began serving as artistic and music director of Music in the Mountains, based in California.^[1] More recently, Vajda was named music director and conductor of the Huntsville Symphony Orchestra in Huntsville, Alabama.^[1]

Composing

As a composer, recent performances have included a chamber opera, Magic Mountain, presented at the 25th Davos Festival in Switzerland, 2010.^{[citation needed]}
