Gombe, Butambala, Uganda, often referred to simply as Gombe, is a municipality in Butambala District, Central Uganda. It is the main municipal, administrative and commercial center of the district and the district headquarters are located there.[1]
Location
Gombe is located approximately 68 kilometres (42 mi), by road, southwest of Kampala, the capital of Uganda and the largest city in the country.[2] This location is approximately 31 kilometres (19 mi), by road, west of the town of Mpigi, the largest metropolitan area in the sub-region.[3] The approximate coordinates of the town are: 00 12 00N, 32 06 00E (latitude: 0.2000; longitude: 32.1000). The coordinates are approximate, because the town does not yet appear on most publicly available maps, as of December 2010.
Despite its rural setting, Gombe is easily accessible to Kampala, with matatu taxis leaving almost every hour. Yet despite its close proximity to the capital, travel time can take over two hours due to the untarmaced roads and the traffic surrounding Kampala. The cost of travel to Kampala ranges between 5,000 and 7,000 Ugandan shillings (US$2 to 3).

Culture
The town is known for staging an annual football competition, known as the Christmas Cup, which is played between teams from Gombe and surrounding villages with the winning team winning a bull provided by the town's mayor.
The 2010 Christmas Cup was one of the most exciting competitions in the tournament's history, with the first inclusion of two foreign players, Mzungus from the UK, Kieran McKeown and Shaun Maclachlan, who played for the pre-tournament favourites, Kayenje Kabula. Shaun Maclachlan played a notable role in the semi-final, scoring two goals to ensure Kabula's passage into the final. The other semi-final was also memorable due to Gombe Hospital's attempt to recruit professional players from the Ugandan Super League. This ultimately led to their disqualification. The final was played on Christmas Day between Kayenje Kabula and Gombe Black Stars, with Kabula winning 1–0 thanks to a 25-yard free-kick from Raul.
