The Golden Throne from Capitol Gorge

The Golden Throne is a mountain located in Capitol Reef National Park, in Utah, United States. It is a rock formation dome made up of in a gold-stained Navajo Sandstone, which is particularly special because normally the sandstone is creamy white (in this part of Utah) or red (in places like Zion National Park). The presence of a small amount of the Carmel Formation on top of the Navajo Sandstone is the reason for this staining.

A two mile long trail runs below the mountain. The summit is just over 6,400 feet (2,000 m) in elevation and sits in the Waterpocket Fold, a 200-mile (320 km) long landform. It is shaped like a dome like many other domes in the park.

The summit is very difficult to reach and requires a climbing permit from the Capital Reef National Park which it resides in. This climb may take several hours to do from the shortest route.
