Gold Mercury International is a corporate vision strategy think tank and International nongovernmental organization (INGO) based in London. Gold Mercury advises and works with corporations, governments and civil society on global policy formation, strategic visioning, global brand strategy, sustainable business model innovation and organisational and cultural transformation. Since 1961, the organisation presents global awards for visionary leadership in diverse global governance areas.[1] Gold Mercury promotes global citizenship and identity (a global civil society) as a bastion of peace and global sustainability. Gold Mercury was originally structured as an NGO and its corporate governance is ruled by a corporate charter and statutes.

History

Gold Mercury International was founded in Rome in 1961 by Eduardo De Santis, a movie producer and businessman, as a think tank and international organisation focused on advancing governance practices and international relations. Initial members of Gold Mercury included journalists, business leaders and entrepreneurs who wanted to debate critical issues in international affairs, the economy and trade. Due to its growing influence, the Italian government offered its support soon after. President Giuseppe Saragat of Italy, learned of the organisation’s activities and became its patron, hosting the initial Award events and conferences to discuss trade, cooperation and peace.

The Organisation also created the Gold Mercury Awards for Global Governance to recognise world leaders, business people and organisations that were improving trade, governance practices, cooperation and peace. Initial governance Awards were given to companies that improved the safety of factory workers, environmental practices and international trade. During the 1980s the organisation continued its international development, organising international conferences and award ceremonies in diverse parts of the world including: Mexico, Venezuela, US, Pakistan, USSR, Spain and China. The events were co-hosted by the national governments. In the late 1990s the organization relocated to London.[2] As of 2004 the organization had an annual budget of about US$1 million and a staff of 25 people.[3] Today, the organisation has both for profit and not for profit activities. The main activities are corporate vision advisory, global intelligence research and organising the Gold Mercury Awards and Summits. Since 2008, Gold Mercury International has been a participant in the United Nations Global Compact.[4]

Gold Mercury International organizes global forums and events to debate globally important subjects, and disseminates its work through a variety of print and digital publications.[1] Over the years Gold Mercury has developed into a strategic visioning think tank and advisory firm and has developed several frameworks for improving sustainability, strategic foresight and for understanding global complexity. Eduardo De Santis is the Chairman and remains a key figure in the organisation. Eduardo De Santis was awarded in 2013 by President Giorgio Napolitano of Italy the ‘Order of the Italian Star’ (Ordine della Stella d’Italia – OSI) for his services to the nation. Nicolas De Santis, son of the founder is the organisation's President. The organisation’s name ‘Gold Mercury’ comes from combining the words ‘Gold’ and 'Mercury' the god of trade. The Gold Mercury statue and Award is the symbol of the organisation.

Anticipatory Governance and Corporate Vision

Gold Mercury has focused on the development of anticipatory governance and strategic visioning tools as a means to integrate the future and sustainable thinking in corporate strategy, governance and decision making. This led to the development of the Corporate Vision System a toolbox to create, integrate and implement corporate vision strategies. Developing Anticipatory Governance tools remains a key area of study of the think tank.

Glogo - Global Governance Model

As part of its anticipatory governance activities Gold Mercury developed GLOGO – The Global Governance Monitoring System a framework to understand global complexity and explain how the world works. Glogo organises our planet in 8 core global areas: Peace & security, Global Science, International Law and humanitarian affairs, Global environment, Global resources, Global Culture, Global Economic and Social Policy and Global Health. Gold Mercury also has a global network of experts covering these topics and areas.

GLOGO also incorporates a 5 level governance rating system and database to determine how global events and decisions affect sustainable development with each rating level indicating a different type of future scenario.
