Golabganj (Bengali: গোলাপগঞ্জ) is an Upazila of Sylhet District in the Division of Sylhet, Bangladesh.

History

Golapganj came into existence on 20 October 1906 as thana.Nothing is definitely known about the origin of the Upazila name. It is learnt that in past during the region of Emperor Islam Shah one Mr. Golap Roy was appointed the Dewan (Revenue collector) of Syhet area. He became prominent by virtue of his social work and pity. He set up a trading centre meaning ganj on the bank of the river Surma that was named Golabganj after his name. The Upaila might have derived its name from this area name where its headquarters is located.

Area and Location

The Upazila occupies an area of 278.33 sq. km. It is located between 24º41´ and 24º55´ north latitudes and between 91º55´ and 92º06´ east longitudes. The Upazilas is bounded on the north by Beanibazar, Kanaighat and Sylhet sadar Upazilas, on the south by Fenchuganj Upazila and on the east by Beanibazar and Baralekha upazilas of Maulvibazar Zila and on the west by Sylhet sadar and Beralekha Upazila of Maulavibazar Zila.

Demographics

According to the census 2011, Golapganj has a population of 3,16,149. Males constitute 50.29% of the population, and females 49.71%. 48.17% of the population is age eighteen or older. Average Household size 6.23 person and population density is 1136 person per Sq km. Golapganj has an average literacy rate of 57.0% (7+ years), and the national average of 32.4% literate.[1]
