God's Pocket is an American drama film directed by John Slattery and co-written with Alex Metcalf, based on a 1983 novel of same name by Pete Dexter. The film stars Christina Hendricks, Philip Seymour Hoffman, John Turturro and Richard Jenkins. The film premiered at the 2014 Sundance Film Festival to largely scathing reviews. Variety said Slattery "makes a wobbly transition into feature filmmaking with this drab and uninvolving dark comedy about two parents reacting to their son’s suspicious death in increasingly hapless and hazardous way". Hollywood Reporter compared it to a "movie by the Coen Brothers directed with one arm tied behind their backs", calling it a "half-good effort" that lacked the "snap, precision and stylistic smarts a mixed-tone project like this requires". The Salt Lake Tribune noted that the characters "come off as caricatures who are less authentic than the people in a Bruce Springsteen song." The film was picked up for distribution by IFC.
