Globuloviridae is a family of dsDNA virus that infects Pyrobaculum and Thermoproteus Archaea. This family was first described by the team led by D. Prangishvili in 2004.
The name is derived from the Latin word globulus meaning a 'small ball'.
Virology
The virons are enveloped and ~100 nanometers (nm) in diameter
The genome is encapsulated in nucleoprotein in a helical nucleocapsid.
The genome itself is nonsegmented, linear double-stranded DNA of length 20-30kilobases. It has terminally redundant sequences that have inverted terminal repetitions. It encodes 45-50 open reading frames.
