Glanville Interchange railway station is a railway station with four platforms on the Outer Harbor railway line which is located in the northwestern Adelaide suburb of Glanville on the LeFevre Peninsula. It is located 13.8 km (8 miles 44 chains) by railway from the Adelaide Railway Station.
Today, Glanville is a broad gauge (1600mm) only station, served only by diesel electric railcars, run by Adelaide Metro. Up until February 2013, a number of peak hour services from Adelaide terminated here as supplements to express services to/from the City, however these were withdrawn in favour of terminating services at Osborne.[1]
History
The station opened in 1878 with the extension of the Adelaide to Port Adelaide railway to Semaphore. This remained the main line, until the extension of the current line from Glanville towards Outer Harbor. The Semaphore branch line ran mainly in the middle of Dunnikier Road (later renamed Semaphore Road) and remained open until 1978 (a century after it opened). During its final years, the service was run with the small 55 class Brill railcars before being replaced in 1968 by the Redhen railcars.
