Giubiasco railway station (Switzerland)
|
Giubiasco is a railway station in the Swiss canton of Ticino and municipality of Giubiasco. The station is on the Swiss Federal Railways Gotthard railway, between Bellinzona and Lugano, and is the junction point with the Luino–Bellinzona railway that has branches to Locarno and Luino.[1][2]
To the south of Giubiasco station, the Gotthard railway's main line commences its climb over the Monte Ceneri Pass, leaving the valley of the Ticino river that it has followed since it left the Gotthard Tunnel, and heading for Lake Lugano. The steep line over Monte Ceneri isn't suitable for high speed rail or heavy freight trains, and a new rail tunnel, the Ceneri Base Tunnel, is currently under construction to avoid it.[2][3]
As a major junction station, Giubiasca has two island platforms serving four platform tracks, together with a number of freight tracks. However most long distance trains pass through the station without stopping, serving instead Bellinzona station one stop to the north.
The station is served by trains on lines S10 and S20 of the Treni Regionali Ticino Lombardia (TILO), both of which operate every half hour. The S10 operates between Bellinzona, Lugano and Chiasso, with some trains extending northwards to Airolo and southwards to Milan, whilst the S20 operates between Locarno, Bellinzona and Castione-Arbedo. A small number of trains on line S30, between Bellinzona, Luino and Malpensa Airport, also serve the station.[4]
