Girlguiding Ulster
Girlguiding Ulster is one of the nine regions of Girlguiding UK. Its headquarters are at Lorne House, County Down. In 2006, there were approximately 500 units across Northern Ireland.[1]
In 1974, the Guides' headquarters in Belfast were burned down.[2]
Lorne House and Outdoor Activity Centre Girlguiding Ulster
Lorne is a 21-acre (85,000 m2) estate in County Down with a variety of facilities for Guiding activities, including residential accommodation and campsites.
Lorne House was built in the Scottish Baronial style in 1875 by Henry Campbell. It was purchased by the Guides in 1946, and was officially opened in 1947.[3]
Lorne Estate Built in 1875, Lorne still retains much of its original character. It was the home of Henry Campbell, a prominent Belfast linen merchant, who named the estate after the hereditary home of the Campbell clan in Scotland. Purchased by Girlguiding Ulster in 1946 it is now an upgraded, modernised residential venue with access throughout for those with special needs. Location - Located in an enviable position, just 6 miles from Belfast, Lorne's ease of access by car or public transport is a unique benefit. Once you have entered the gates of Lorne you are transported to a quiet, safe environment where you can truly relax and enjoy the surroundings. A short stroll will take you to the shores of Belfast Lough, or you may prefer to visit the local pub and restaurant just a 15 minute walk away. Access - To gain access to Lorne from Station Road, it is necessary to go under the railway bridge which has a height restriction of 3.5 meters. Groups staying in the Ranger Cottage or on Glen Road camp site may use the entrance on Glen Road.
Lorne House The ground floor comprises a large entrance hall, solarium with comfortable seating area, gracious dining room and 4 elegant, versatile meeting rooms, all with Wi-Fi access. A newly refurbished, fully equipped kitchen offers 2 6-burner gas cookers, fridge, freezer, dishwasher, hot trolley, and a laundry room with washing machine and tumble dryer. The upper floors in Lorne can accommodate 29 residential guests in a range of bedroom sizes. There are 2 bathrooms, each with 2 showers, sinks and toilet facilities. In addition there is a single ensuite shower room servicing 2 bedrooms. A stroll around the well tended grounds is a pleasant way to unwind at the end of a busy day, or perhaps you may enjoy a drink from the bar while sitting in the solarium overlooking the patio, tastefully designed with tables, chairs and shrub areas. (Minimum number 15) Marion Greeves Centre The Marion Greeves Centre is a purpose built centre, with accommodation for up to 38 people. This single story residential centre is equipped with all the essentials for indoor holidays, including cooking and kitchen equipment. All cleaning materials are provided for those on a self catered visit. With 5 dorms and 5 smaller ensuite bedrooms, the accommodation is ideal for mixed groups, having both bedrooms and excellent showering facilities at either end of the building with the dining and recreational living areas located in the centre. The fully equipped kitchen comprises a 6-burner gas cooker with double oven, fridge, freezer and microwave. A large serving hatch through to the dining room ensures meals are served with ease. The main rooms of the centre open onto a large patio area, with picnic tables and chairs ideal for al fresco dining on a sunny day, while the adventure play area and zip wire provide endless hours of fun.
