Gingee River

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Gingee River (Tamil : செஞ்சி ஆறு) is a 79 km long river in southern India. The Gingee River is also known as the "Varahanadi" or the "Sankaraparani". It originates to the west of the town of Gingee in Viluppuram District of the State of Tamil Nadu by the union of two sources, one from the Pakkamalai Mountains and other from the Malayanur Hills.[1] The Gingee river flows in an easterly direction and picks up the inflows of the Nariar, and the Tondiar Pambaiyar. The Gingee flows eastwards until about the village Nangilikondan where it turns southeast for the rest of its course. After about 45 km, a little more than half of its route, the river enters Puducherry Union Territory. About six miles from its mouth it divides with the Gingee and its distributaries the Ariankuppam (Ariyankuppam), Chunnambar and Kilinjalar continuing on into the Bay of Bengal, south of the city of Pondicherry.[2] The flow in the Gingee River is periodic, i.e. it will usually only flows during the rainy season from October to December water.[1]
