Gilbertson is a Scottish patronymic surname of Norman-French and pre Old Germanic origins meaning son of Gilbert.[1] There are alternate spellings, such as the Scandinavian Gilbertsen. It derives from Gaelic personal names and means "son of the servant of St. Brigit". Records show that the Gilbertsens settled in Peebles prior to the Norman conquest of England in 1066.
