Gibson Trini Lopez

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The original version of the Gibson Trini Lopez was a full depth hollow body electric guitar with some very unusual styling features. It had a double cutaway body (rare on a full hollow body Gibson) with pointed horns and diamond shaped f-holes and pick guard. It had a trapeze tailpiece, which was typical of full bodied Gibson jazz guitars and a sunburst finish. The neck was similar to the "reverse" style Gibson Firebird with split diamond inlays and with all 6 tuners in line on the lower edge of the headstock. This version of the Trini Lopez (the model actually played by Lopez) was only produced for a very short period of time and is extremely rare.

It was released in 1964 as a signature model for Latin pop star Trini Lopez.

The revised version Gibson Trini Lopez is a semi-hollow body electric guitar manufactured by Gibson, It is based on the ES range of Gibson semi-acoustic guitars. More specifically, this guitar is said to have been based on a mid 60's Gibson ES-335, but it retained the unique styling of the earlier full bodied version, including the tailpiece. Other changes include a change to the "non-reverse" version of the Firebird headstock. The original guitar had 'patent number' Humbucking pickups-an evolution of the hallowed PAF pickups. In recent years, the Gibson Custom Shop has come out with a reissue but have made several major changes. The reissue, unlike the original has the classic 335 rounded cutaways instead of the horn shaped ones on the original, has no pickguard and has the output jack located on the front instead of the side.

Artists who have famously used this guitar include Noel Gallagher of Oasis, who used a Trini Lopez model between 2002 and 2005, and can be seen in the video for Lyla. Gallagher's former Oasis bandmate Andy Bell uses a red Trini Lopez, similar to Noel's, with his new band, Beady Eye. His guitar is fitted with a Bigsby Vibrato and a black pickguard (again, the same specs as Noel's guitar). Probably a more well known user of this model is Dave Grohl of the Foo Fighters, who uses a "Pelham Blue" Dave Grohl Custom (DG-335) which is modeled after the Trini Lopez, which has become his main guitar when playing concerts. Gibson's Custom Shop has released a Dave Grohl signature model (The Gibson DG-335) which is exactly the same spec as his. Steve Mazur of Canadian rock band Our Lady Peace currently uses this guitar for live concert performances.
