Ghosts of Download is the upcoming tenth studio album by American band Blondie, to be released on March 17, 2014,[1] as part of a two-disc package including a CD of Blondie's biggest hits. Its lead single, "A Rose by Any Name", was released on June 21, 2013,[6] around the time of the album's main promotional campaign kick-off. The album's title refers to spirits in the background of electricity and data.[7]

Background and recording

In March 2013 the band announced via Facebook and Twitter that they were putting finishing touches to new music, suggesting they had been recording for several months. The album was recorded at Mercy Sound Studios in New York City.[2] Chris Stein announced through Twitter that artists scheduled to feature on the album include girl group Stush, hip hop group Los Rakas and Colombian electronica artist Systema Solar. On 19 June the group announced through Facebook that they were still recording but almost finished.[8] It was announced in August that an EDM collaboration with Hector Fonseca was to feature on the album.[9]

Promotion

The album's promotional campaign kicked off in March 2013, when a snippet of "Make A Way" featured on WNYC 93.9 FM Soundcheck.[10]

The band embarked on the European Blast Off Tour from June 11-July 10, 2013. The band performed six songs from the album; "Rave", "A Rose by Any Name", "Take Me in the Night", "Winter", "Drag You Around" and "Sugar on the Side". Prior to this, Debbie Harry and Chris Stein appeared on the UK's The One Show to publicise the new album and the Blast Off Tour, with Stein announcing he felt the new tracks were the best yet.[11]

The album was confirmed on June 19, 2013.,[8] "A Rose By Any Name", the lead single was released on June 21. The album track-listing was revealed 28 June.[12] At this time, Blondie announced their US No Principals Tour for Autumn 2013. Five songs from the album were made available to download with each ticket purchased.[13][14][15] The songs were reported to be "Make A Way", "Drag You Around", "Can't Stop Wanting", "A Rose by Any Name" and "I Screwed Up". However some fans received "Sugar on the Side" in place of "A Rose by Any Name". The song "Mile High" was debuted during the later shows of the tour.

"Sugar on the Side" was debuted on the fashion show Project Runway. The episode aired on October 25, 2013 and featured Harry as a guest judge.[16] Viewers could unlock the song by retweeting Project Runway on social networking site Twitter.[16][17] It was later released as a single in North America.[18]

Release

The album was originally scheduled to be released in November 2013[7] but the release was pushed back to January 2014 to avoid the rush of albums released for the Christmas period.[19] On 31 December 2013, Debbie Harry stated in an interview with Anderson Cooper that the album would be released in March 2014.

It was announced in the February 2014 issue of Vanity Issue Magazine, for which Debbie Harry was photographed, that the album will be released as part of a special package entitled Blondie 4(0) Ever (marking the band's 40th anniversary) which will also include a CD of the band's biggest hits, re-recorded and remixed in 2013.[20]

The final January 2014 issue of Mojo Magazine in the UK confirmed the album's release date as March 17, 2014,[1] to be supplemented with the "Blondie 40th Anniversary World Wide Tour".

Artwork

The album artwork is by J. H. Williams III, who has previously worked at DC Comics and also created the artwork for "A Rose by Any Name".[21][22]
