Ghatanji is a very old city and municipal council in Yavatmal district in the state of Maharashtra, India. It is also known as 'Cotton City', because in this area farmer produces fine quality of cottons. It is also a place of pilgrimage of 'Brahmalin Shree Sant Maroti Maharaj' having Devasthan near the bank of river 'Waghadi'. Every year, in the month of January–February, a fair in the name of 'Brahmalin Shree Sant Maroti Maharaj' takes place at the 'Azad Maidan'. The day on which 'Dahi Handi' is being celebrated, is the main occasion in one month fair.
Ghatanji being composition of name 'Ghati' and 'Anji', being nearby suburbs, it is a main city in Yavatmal District. There is a historical temple belongs to 'Lord Nrusinha' also called as 'Lord Narsimha', which is built in 'Hemadpanthi' architectural style. Peoples from all the corners of Maharashtra State as well as Andhra Pradesh State comes here to pay homage to 'Lord Nrusinha/Narsimha'."

Geography

There is almost ample water resources due to river 'Waghadi' and Dam over there. It is having ample forest jungles, consist Teak Wood, Nilgiri Trees and many other spices of trees. Various types of animals are living in these jungles.

Education, business and industries

It has several educational institutes in the city having facilities of nursery education in both English as well as Marathi Languages up to Graduation level in Arts, Commerce and Science faculties. Ghatanji is privileged by having 'Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya', being only such Vidyalaya in the Yavatmal district at Belora. There is a college of I.T.I., having fabulous building. There are also having several Information Technology Institute.the most famous person and good looking, with a brain to die for all this qualities are in Mr. Adil Chavhan. It is to be mentioned that, many faces from the city have excelled and some are excelling in their respective fields, few names to list here are viz. Late Shri. Sahadeoji Bharti; first Member of Parliament from the Yavatmal constituency, Shri. Sadashivraoji Thakre; former Member of Parliament from the Yavatmal constituency, Mr. Bharat Yemsanwar, Om Prakash Agrawal, Diwakar chowdhary, Adv. Rupesh Munot - a well known Legal and Financial Expert and Consultant (www.rbmunotassociates.blogspot.com), Prasad Khaparde, Manish Drona, Praveen Thakare, CA Vyanktesh Jaiswal. Dr Iqbal Musani who is from Local School of Ghatanji, is the first doctor from this place. He stood in Merit List from amongst candidates of Vidarbha and secured Highest marks in Marathi in spite being Marathi not his Mother tongue. He is now the working as a speciialist in clinical patholoy and Professor of Pathology in Ibn Sina Medical College Jeddah in Saudi Arabia.ghatanji has been Lucky enough to be crowned with just jewels whio have the name of the town fly high. It is also birthplace of tausif quereshi who recently got diploma in animation. Justice Mamad Ali Gilani Just Retired as High cour Judge also hails from Ghatanji and belongs to Famous Gilani family.

It is a big market place for the nearby towns and villages. Being 'Cotton City', it has a well established Agriculture Produce Market Committee i.e. 'APMC'. Cotton is a main source of production in agriculture. Agriculture is the primary way and source of living-hood. There are many Ginning and Pressing Factories are located in the city and nearby. One of the oldest factory is 'Birla Cotsyn (India) Limited' popularly known as 'Jamod Ginning'.A small place near Belora has Central school(CBSE), other colleges have varied subjects taught in different modalities of science, Arts, Business Studies etc.

Demographics

As of 2001 India census,[1] Ghatanji had a population of 19,347. Males constitute 52% of the population and females 48%. Ghatanji has an average literacy rate of 74%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 80%, and female literacy is 68%. In Ghatanji, 12% of the population is under 6 years of age.
