Geomagic

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Geomagic is a software development company focused on 3D software and technology for design and engineering. The company was founded in 1997 by Ping Fu and Herbert Edelsbrunner. The company is headquartered in Research Triangle Park, NC.

Geomagic software products have focused on the process of 3D capture into usable 3D data so the models can be used in engineering, product design, art, archeology, medical procedures and archival purposes. In recent years, that has been expanded into 3D inspection and metrology tools for first-article inspection of products in a manufacturing production line. These reality capture technologies are used widely in Educational institutions and Research and Development facilities in medical, dental and bio-mechanical fields. The products focus on providing workflows for engineers into CAD, FEA, simulation and animation software systems that they use. File format support for the 3D models includes all standard 3D neutral formats as well as plug-in support directly into major CAD platforms.

In 2012, Geomagic acquired Sensable Technologies,[1] which develops 3D software for force-feedback in design processes and hardware devices for haptic processes.

Geomagic Products

3D Capture and Point Cloud processing software

Geomagic's core technologies are embodied in two software products called Geomagic Studio and Geomagic Wrap. Both solutions process 3D point cloud datasets created using 3D scanners. Geomagic Studio delivers 3D models in polygons and NURBS surfaces, which can be read directly into Autodesk Inventor, CATIA, SolidWorks, Creo (formerly Pro/ENGINEER) and SpaceClaim. Geomagic Wrap only delivers 3D models in polygonal formats and exports out to standard 3D formats (IGES, Step, OBJ etc.)

In January 2013, Geomagic released the Geomagic Spark software which combines point cloud processing tools with a CAD platform from SpaceClaim.

3D Inspection and Metrology Software

Geomagic Qualify and Geomagic Qualify Probe focus on delivering measurement, comparison and reporting software tools for first-article and automated inspection processes. Data from point cloud and 3D scanners and Coordinate Measuring Machines (CMMs) can be used, as well as CAD data imported into the system.

Force feedback design software and haptic devices

The Geomagic Sensable Group delivers both Freeform and ClayTools software for touch-enabled design workflows, bundled with the Sensable Phantom and Omni haptic devices which interface with the software to deliver force-feedback to the user. Freeform Plus also delivers advanced tools to prepare a design for mold creation and milling, as well as having auto-surface features integrated from Geomagic Studio.

Awards

Across the years, Geomagic has received several awards for business and technology. These include:

  • Aug 8 2011 - CED: Keep an eye on these companies[2]
