Geochemical Society

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Geochemical Society is a nonprofit and international scientific society for the purpose of encouraging the application of chemistry to solve problems involving geology and cosmology. Their offices are located in the Earth and Planetary Sciences Department at Washington University in Saint Louis, Missouri.

Affiliations

The Geochemical Society is affiliated with both the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the International Union of Geological Sciences

Organization and meetings

The Geochemical Society is run by a board of directors who meet annually at the V.M. Goldschmidt conference. The 2008 meeting was at the 18th annual V.M. Goldschmidt Conference, being held from July 13–18, 2008 at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, Canada. The society co-sponsored the conference, along with the European Association of Geochemistry.

Membership

The Geochemical Society has over 3000 international members. Most members are students, researchers and faculty of geochemistry related fields, although anyone with an interest in geochemistry may join. Membership is calendar year and dues are US$ 30 for a Professional, US$ 10 for Student, and $12 for Seniors. Membership includes a subscription to Elements Magazine and also offers discounts on Geochemical Society publications, Mineralogical Society of America publications and conference registration discounts at the Goldschmidt Conference, Spring AGU, Fall AGU, and the annual GSA conference.

Publications

The Geochemical Society publishes, co-publishes, or sponsors the following:

Awards

The Geochemical Society presents the following awards:

  • V. M. Goldschmidt Award - for major achievements in geochemistry or cosmochemistry.
  • F.W. Clarke Medal - to an early-career scientist for a single outstanding contribution to geochemistry or cosmochemistry.
  • C.C. Patterson Medal - for a recent innovative breakthrough in environmental geochemistry of fundamental significance.
  • Alfred Treibs Medal - The Organic Geochemistry Division (OGD) of the Geochemical Society awards this for major achievements, over a period of years, in organic geochemistry.
  • OGD Best Paper Award - The Organic Geochemistry Division (OGD) of the Geochemical Society awards this to the authors of a paper published in the previous year with significant contributions to organic geochemistry.
  • Geochemical Fellows - Awarded annually by the Geochemical Society and the European Association of Geochemistry to outstanding scientists who have, over some years, made a major contribution to the field of geochemistry.
  • Distinguished Service Award - Recognizes and documents outstanding service to the Geochemical Society and/or the geochemical community that greatly exceeds the normal expectations of voluntary service.
