Gene Adam was the original singer of Iced Earth/Purgatory,[1] he did not get to write most of the lyrics along with Jon Schaffer and Randall Shawver. Jon Schaffer was then introduced to John Greely through their mutual friend Tom Morris and after one short practice he was hired to replace Gene. Gene left due to the fact that Jon Schaffer would not allow him to contribute lyrics. Gene was also the singer of Unearthed for a short time together with former Iced Earth bassist Dave Abell and former guitarist Randall Shawver. He now has a family and lives in Florida.
