Genazzano FCJ College is a Roman Catholic, day and boarding school for girls, located in Kew, an eastern suburb of Melbourne, Victoria, Australia.

Established in 1889 by the Faithful Companions of Jesus (FCJ Sisters), the college has a non-selective enrolment policy and currently caters for approximately 1,100 students from Preparatory to Year 12, including 50 boarders from Years prep to 12.[2]

Genazzano is a member of the Association of Heads of Independent Schools of Australia (AHISA),[3] the Association of Independent Schools of Victoria (AISV),[4] the Alliance of Girls' Schools Australasia.[5] and a founding member of Girls Sport Victoria (GSV).[6]

History

Genazzano FCJ College was founded in 1889 as a boarding school for country girls by the order, Faithful Companions of Jesus (FCJ Sisters), specifically Marie Madeleine D'Houet, in honour of whom one of the schools houses is named, on its current site at Kew.[7]

The Wardell Building is listed on the Victorian Heritage Register.[8]

House system

As with most Australian schools, Genazzano utilises a house system. There are currently six houses named after people significant in the school's history:

  • D'Houet (Royal Blue): Named after Marie Madeleine D'Houet, Foundress of FCJ Sisters.
  • Stock (Gold): Named after Mother Stanislaus Stock, first Principal of Genazzano, 1889–1914.
  • Gerda (Green): Named after Mother Gerda Prytz, first Genazzano pupil to enter FCJ Society.
  • Douglas (Magenta): Named after Mother Philomena Douglas, Principal of Genazzano, 1932–1958.
  • Corry (Red): Named after Mrs Ellen Corry, first pupil, first President of OGA (Past Pupils).
  • Winter (White): Named after Miss Mary Winter, honoured past pupil. The College Prize for Loyalty is still given in her honour.

The houses compete in Swimming, Athletics (track and field), Cross Country, and the 'Genazzano Day' House Dance Competition.

Facilities

Genazzano FCJ College is situated within spacious grounds incorporating attractive gardens and extensive learning and sporting facilities.

Wardell Building

The original Wardell Building was built in 1889 as the initial school building, convent and boarding facility. It now accommodates reception, administration and the Principal’s Office and has recently undergone an upgrade of the second and third floors that has allowed for the relocation of the VCE students to a refurbished Wardell first floor. The Wardell Building also houses the Chapel and the Wardell Theatre.

d’Houet Building

The d'Houet Building was constructed in 2000 and incorporates extensive library and technology facilities, state-of-the-art science laboratories and preparation areas, a modern careers centre and classrooms for the Middle Years including tutorial rooms and conference facilities. The d'Houet Building is also home to the cafeteria. In 2008, the ground floor was transformed to provide facilities for the Performance Psychology Centre and the Learning Enhancement Area. The provision of additional learning and meeting rooms, toilet and change room amenities and recreation space is also a feature of the new development.

Grange Hill

The Grange Hill Building has undergone a transformation in 2012. Within the beautiful historic Grange Hill surrounds, light-filled contemporary learning spaces have been created to support our rich and varied curriculum. A stunning central library interfaces with communal piazzas and outdoor areas where our students have the opportunity to construct, research and reflect. Homerooms have been re-designed so that the academic and creative domains of science, music, the arts and movement are facilitated by transparent, transformative spaces that recognise and reflect the diversity of learning experiences. There are spaces for quiet times and listening, and integrated spaces that enable social relationships and collaboration. The new Early Learning Centre (ELC) opening in 2013, will enable the College to provide a three-year-old and a fouryear-old kindergarten program for girls and boys. Children who belong to our Early Learning community benefit from their close proximity to our Early Years Prep to Year 4 students and enjoy access to the extensive facilities and specialist programs at Genazzano.

The Madeleine Centre

In 2011, Genazzano FCJ College realised a long-held dream by opening the new Madeleine Centre for Music and the Performing Arts, which is a significant development in the history of the College. The Madeleine Centre is a state-of-the-art facility providing exceptional performance and learning spaces for students and the community. The naming of the Madeleine Centre recognises Marie Madeleine Victoire de Bengy de Bonnault d’Houet (1781–1858), Foundress of the Society of Sisters, Faithful Companions of Jesus.

The building features include:

- 450-seat auditorium

- orchestra pit

- 2 music classrooms

- 13 instrumental tuition rooms

- 2 foyer/exhibition spaces

- catering facilities

- control room (with space for student learning)

- gallery, sculpture garden, oak tree and St Raphael’s courtyards

- state-of-the-art optical-fibre theatrical, communication and automation network

All Hallows

Genazzano has recently leased this beautiful facility in Brenbeal St, Balwyn, home for many years of the All Hallows Primary School Parish. In 2013 the All Hallows campus will be home to our Year 9 students who will all be participating in the Making Connections Program.

Physical Education Precinct

The Physical Education Precinct incorporates Centenary Hall, which houses a full gymnasium and a 25-metre indoor heated pool.

Tennis Precinct

A new Tennis Precinct was established in 2011. The Precinct includes seven new courts, four of which are dedicated to tennis. The courts match those of the Australian Open and this provides a great steppingstone for those who dream of playing in the big time! The clubrooms, while modest, are a fabulous addition. With the College Master Plan envisioning a grand pavilion on the north side by the end of 2020, there is still very much to look forward to as the Club and the Precinct evolve.

Hopetoun Hall

Situated 3 kilometres from the College, the Boarding House offers a secure, comfortable and supportive Catholic environment for our 40 Year 9–12 boarders. The offsite residence provides a great sense of community for our students while they study at Genazzano. Hopetoun Hall is a traditional period home in keeping with the Camberwell ambience. Made up of two buildings, the older house and a modern, purpose-built residence, the two are joined by an interconnecting hallway. The house is air-conditioned, centrally heated and monitored by 24-hour security. Common rooms include a sitting room with TV and wireless internet access, a dining room, a computer room and a multipurpose/exercise room, which has well used exercise equipment. The house has two pianos and private spaces for our students to facilitate music pursuits.

Programs

The Co-curricular program aims to enhance and extend students’ interests beyond the classroom. Genazzano has an extensive activity base with over 80 supervised activities running throughout the College. The journey of learning is not complete without Genazzano FCJ College’s enriching co-curricular and extra-curricular programs. Outstanding opportunities are available for students to be involved in a wide range of activities. Activities span the areas of Music and Sport, as well as a wide range of interest-based activities including public speaking/debating, cooking, the Tournament of Minds, and Science and Maths clubs.

Co-curricular activities are run before, during or after school or on weekends. They may involve weekly meetings or an intensive session/s.

Students may choose and commit to activities on a term or semester basis. For those students who participate in the activity over a semester or equivalent, a colour point may be awarded. These points are cumulative over students’ years at Genazzano and may contribute to the award of a red, striped or gold laurel band.

Sport

Genazzano celebrates a rich sporting culture, having a strong involvement in Girls Sport Victoria. Inter school sports include Indoor Cricket, Softball, Tennis, Hockey, Netball, AFL, Soccer, Basketball, Badminton, Volleyball, Water Polo and Cricket.

The Genazzano Rowing Club (GRC) was established in 1985 to provide students with the opportunity to compete at the inaugural Head of the Schoolgirls Regatta. Since its inception, the GRC has grown and strengthened into one of the most prominent schoolgirls’ rowing clubs in the country. The GRC now provides rowing experiences to more than 100 students from Year 8 to 12 and exposes them to state and national level competition. Every aspect of the GRC is directed at providing students with the greatest opportunity to grow and develop as strong, confident young women. Every effort is made to ensure that all students derive enjoyment, satisfaction, fulfilment and success from participating in sport.

The Arts

Arts and Crafts - Students have the opportunity to develop skills in areas such as decoupage, embroidery and photography.

Dance - Students in Years 5–6 can take part in dance; the class puts an emphasis on fun and learning choreography. Both beginners and experienced dancers are welcome.
