Genādijs Soloņicins (born 3 January 1980 in Liepāja) is a football midfielder from Latvia, currently playing for Liepājas Metalurgs in Latvia.

Club career

Soloņicins played for Liepājas Metalurgs for 12 years, making his debut in 1997. In the penultimate match of the 2004 Virslīga season he missed a crucial last minute penalty in a 3-2 loss to FC Skonto meaning the club lost out to Skonto on becoming Latvian Champions. However, the following season, Soloņicins was part of the Liepājas Metalurgs team that finally broke Skonto's 14 year reign over Latvian football when they became Virslīga champions in October 2005.[1] In December he was named the Virslīgas best Midfielder of the 2005 season.[2]

In summer 2009 he joined FK Simurq Zaqatala from Azerbaijan.[3] While playing there he became a very important first eleven player there. The club started the 2009-2010 season very well but the end of the season was not so good. Simurq finished as the 7th strongest team in the regular championship. Teams in Azerbaijan are divided into 2 pools after the end of the regular season - 6 teams in each pool. As Simurq finished the championship in the 7th place, they were put in the second pool were there were only the 6 weakest teams. Due to this fact, Genādijs decided to leave the team before the season ended. He left the team in February 2010.[4]

He signed a contract with Liepājas Metalurgs in March 2010, returning to the team, where he had played for 13 years before. At the end of 2010 he broke his contract with Metalurgs, but after struggling in searches for a new club abroad, he returned to Liepājas Metalurgs in February 2011, after being out of football for half a year.[5]

International career

Soloņicins has made 44 appearances for the Latvian national team and scored 1 goal.[6]
