Gee[1][2] is the 1st mini-album by a South Korean girl group Girls' Generation. The mini-album was released on January 7, 2009 after their 9 months of hiatus.

History

On December 26, 2008, posters of the Girls' Generation members wearing roller-skates were posted up in various locations around Seoul. SM Entertainment's phone lines were blocked up by callers asking whether the posters were for sale and the company asked fans to stop taking the posters down for personal use.[3] On December 29, the group's management stated that the posters were indeed teaser posters and that the group would soon release their first EP, Gee, in January 2009.[4] "Gee" was released on online music sites on January 5, 2009, with the physical release on January 7. A 25-second teaser video was released in January 2009 and the first single "Gee" released soon after.

Composition

Famous composers like E-TRIBE, Kenzie, Ik-su Ahn, and Young-hu Kim participated in the making of the album. This album contains total five songs including the lead single of the same title. The album contains total 5 songs including ‘Dear. Mom’, a pop ballad with a beautiful lyric containing the love of a daughter toward her mother and ‘Destiny’ which presents great fun through the melody that travels between feigned and natural voices, strong beat, and powerful refrain, and all songs in the album will let you feel great sensibilities of the Girls’ Generation. ‘Let's talk about Love’ lyrics delivers the message of hope and courage to the people with broken hearts.[5] The first single of the album, "Gee" is a fast-tempo song (despite only going in 100 BPM)[6] about a girl who has fallen in love for the first time.[7] The title is supposed to be an exclamation of surprise, similar to "어머나!" (Eomeona!, similar in meaning to "Oh, my goodness!", or, more similarly, "Gee!" in English).[7]

The song "Way to Go!" (Korean: 힘내!) is a new full version of Girls' Generation and TVXQ Samsung's Anycall Haptic Commercial digital single, "Haptic Motion", and an official music video was released featuring the making of music video "Gee".The MV of Gee also had SHINee's MinHo as guest appearance. "Dear. Mom" was composed by Kim Tae Sung, while the lyrics were composed by his girlfriend singer Ivy, though she used the penname "The Lighthouse" in the album credits.

Commercial performance

SM Entertainment stated that over 100,000 copies of the mini-album were shipped to stores while sales analyst company Hanteo reported sales in excess of 30,000 copies within the first 10 days of its release.[8] According to their agency SM Entertainment, the album sold nearly 65,000 copies.[9] Gee was able to sold more than 100,000 copies.[10]

Single

A week after its release, "Gee" went #1 on Music Bank; however, questions were raised when the group did not appear on the program for unknown reasons, with rumors spreading regarding a possible rift between SM Entertainment and KBS.[11] "Gee" also went to #1 on SBS's 인기가요 (Inkigayo) a week after their return.[12]

"Gee" first tied with "Nobody" by the Wonder Girls for the longest-running #1 on music portal M.Net (6 weeks).[13] The song then broke the record by staying on top a seventh week,[14] and remained in the position for an eighth week.[15] It also tied[16] then broke[17] the record for longest-running #1 on KBS's Music Bank, beating the 7-week record previously set by Jewelry in 2008 with "One More Time".[16] "Gee" achieved its ninth #1 on the show on March 13, 2009[18] and received its 10th #1 win on June 26, 2009.[19]

The track also showed strength on other charts, topping the Mujikon, Melon and Mnet charts for eight consecutive weeks, the Dosirak chart for seven weeks, the Muse chart for six weeks, and the Baksu chart for four weeks.[20][21]"Gee" topped Cyworld's hourly music chart on the release day.[22] The song also went number one on all major digital music charts within two days.[23] Gee achieved number song of the decade which was given upon them by one of Korea’s most popular online music websites, MelOn.[24]

Promotion

The group began its album promotion on January 2009 on MBC Show! Music Core. They sang their new single, "Gee", and "Him Nae (Way To Go)", another track from the Gee mini-album. Promotions for the Gee ended at the end of March.[25]
