Gazeta 55 (English: Newspaper 55) is an Albanian language newspaper published in Tirana, Albania and is politically unaffiliated daily with nine reporters on staff. The tabloid's owner is Fahri Balliu, an Albanian businessman.

Gazeta 55 has been described as having a right-wing bias,[1] and the newspaper "has a critical attitude towards daily events in Albania." The paper has a daily nationwide circulation of approximately 4,500 copies and is available online in PDF. It was first published on 18 October 1997.[2][3][4][5]

Together with Rilindja Demokratike, it is the only right-winged daily newspaper in the country.

Name

The number "55" was chosen because Article 55 of the Constitution of communist Albania, dealt with Agitation and Propaganda related crimes.[6]

Article 55:
The creation of any type of organization of a fascist, anti-democratic, religious, and anti-socialist character is prohibited.
Fascist, anti-democratic, religious, war-mongering, and anti-socialist activities and propaganda, as well as the incitement of national and racial hatred are prohibited.[7]

The newspaper is organized in three sections, including the magazine.

  1. News: Includes International, National, Tirana, Politics, Business, Technology, Science, Health, Sports, Education.
  2. Opinion: Includes Editorials, Op-Eds and Letters to the Editor.
  3. Features: Includes Arts, Movies, Theater, and a Sigurimi file (mainly about the communist era)

Gazeta 55 has had a web presence since 2008. Accessing articles requires none registration. The newspaper is available in PDF. The online editor is Leonard Quku.[8]
