Gavin Whelan (born 28 October 1983 in Dublin) is an Irish footballer currently playing for Phoenix F.C. Navan Road.

Career

Gavin developed at Home Farm before playing for UCD and was signed by Drogheda United in 2004. He scored the opening goal for Drogheda in the 2005 FAI Cup Final when they lifted the Cup , beating Cork City 2-0 at the old Lansdowne Road. Whelan had completed a unique family treble as both his father and grandfather had also won the FAI Cup. He was also the third generation of the Whelan family to don the famous claret and blue of Drogheda United.

Whelan signed for Bray Wanderers in the close season 2008 and scored 2 goals in 37 total appearances. In 2009 he moved north to play with Lisburn Distillery .

Gavin played for Phoenix for the 2011-12 Leinster Senior League season.

Personal life

Gavin is the grandson of Ronnie Whelan, Sr., son of Paul Whelan, and nephew of the legendary Irish International Ronnie Whelan.
