Gavin Alexander Massey (born 4 October 1992) is an English professional footballer who plays as a forward for Colchester United.

Career

Watford

Massey began his career with his hometown club, Watford. One of the first players to progress through the Harefield Academy, Massey made his first team debut on 2 May 2010, replacing Danny Graham 85 minutes into a 4–0 win over Coventry City at the Ricoh Arena.[3][4] He signed his first professional two-year contract later that month.[5] He stayed with the Championship club despite interest from Premier League giants Liverpool.[6] He progressed in the 2010–11 season, playing regularly for the reserves and youth team, as well as making further substitute appearances in the first team.[7]

On 12 September 2011, Massey signed on loan with League One side Yeovil Town, initially for one-month but later extended until January 2012,[8] and scored his first professional goals in a 2–2 draw with Colchester United.[9] He scored once more for Yeovil, against Chesterfield, before having his loan deal terminated by new Yeovil manager Gary Johnson.

In January 2012 he went on loan again, this time to Colchester United. Due to weather restrictions, he only managed 3 games while at the U's. He was recalled back to Watford as cover due to their injury crisis, on 17 February 2012.[10] He re-signed for Colchester on 16 March 2012 for a month-long loan deal.[11]

Colchester United

On 21 August 2012, Massey signed permanently for Colchester United in an undisclosed three-year deal, having made eight appearances in two loan spells with the U's in the 2011–12 season.[12][13] He made his full debut for the U's on 25 August 2012 in a 1–1 draw with Sheffield United, coming on as a substitute for Freddie Sears in the 88th minute.[14] He scored his first goal for the club in a 3–1 win over Hartlepool United on 29 September 2012.[15] Massey received his first red card for Colchester in a 5–1 defeat to MK Dons on 24 November 2012.[16] Massey scored a brace in Colchester's 3–2 win over Portsmouth on 2 February,[17] and also opened the scoring in a 2–2 draw away at Coventry City on 12 March 2013.[18] His fifth goal of the season came in a vital 2–1 victory over Leyton Orient on 6 April 2013, heading in a Bradley Garmston cross.[19] He helped Colchester to League One safety, scoring the opening goal in a 2–0 victory at Carlisle United on the final day of the 2012–13 season.[20]

Massey opened his scoring account in the second game of the 2013–14 season, providing the only goal in a win against Port Vale at the Community Stadium on 10 August 2013, turning in Jabo Ibehre's rebounded effort from a Chris Neal save.[21]
