Gaur is the headquarters of Rautahat district in Narayani zone, Nepal. The former Prime Minister of Nepal Madhav Kumar Nepal is a resident.[2] Gaur is on the border with Bairgania, India with a border crossing and customs checkpoint.

On March 21, 2007, supporters of the Madhesi People's Rights Forum (MPRF) clashed with supporters of Unified Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist) resulting in death of 104 people.

To Promote local culture Gaur has four Community radio Stations. Thery are One is Radio Rajdevi F.M.- 93.2 MHz, Radio Jiwan jyoti - 90 MHz, Radio Sanskriti - 98.2 MHz and Radio Rautahat - 90.8 MHz.
