Game Grumps is a Let's Play webseries created July 10, 2012 by comedic game critic Jon "JonTron" Jafari and animator Arin "Egoraptor" Hanson. In June 2013, Jafari left the show and was replaced by Leigh "Danny" Avidan, best known as the lead singer in comedic band duo Ninja Sex Party under the name "Danny Sexbang". The YouTube channel has expanded to include several spin-off shows hosted by Hanson and Avidan, as well as fellow animator Ross "Rubberninja" O'Donovan.

Content

The show features video footage of video game content with the hosts commentating over it. In June 2013, Jafari left the show to follow different pursuits, and was replaced with Leigh "Danny" Avidan.[1]

At the same time, Avidan would become the co-host of "Steam Train", along with Ross "RubberNinja" O'Donovan, who is otherwise known for his animations under the RubberNinja mantle.[citation needed] Steam Train features similar content as its sister series but exclusively plays PC games. The show's name references popular online game retailer Steam, through which most of the games are played.

In December 2013, Game Grumps further expanded with the series "Table Flip" hosted by series editor Barry Kramer and Hanson's wife, Suzy Berhow. [2]Table Flip is not released on YouTube, but instead Polaris, a subsidiary of Maker Studios. Table Flip features live action recordings of board games with new special guests in each episode. The show is recorded on a 19th-century inspired set with the players wearing period costumes. As of January 20, 2014 the Game Grumps channel on YouTube has gathered a following of 1,300,000+ subscribers, and 380,000,000+ views.[citation needed]

Jafari and Hanson appeared in a promotional video for the Warner Bros. movie Pacific Rim produced by Polaris. The video also featured other famous internet personalities Jesse Cox, Dodger, Mike "HuskyStarcraft" Lamond and John "CynicalBrit" Bain.[3] In the video they played new recruits under training by "The Lieutenant Commander" played by Robert Kazinsky.

Charity

In late 2013, the Game Grumps had put various games, which they'd received multiple copies of, on eBay for auction, with all the proceeds going to the children's charity Child's Play.[5] After the auctions had ended, the total amount they'd raised was over $7,000.[6]

Popularity

Due to the popularity of the series, there has been a large amount of content created by fans based on the series. Common fan creations include animated re-creations of scenes from the show featuring audio from the show and musical remixes of audio from the show.[7] The show and its hosts have also since been referenced in a number of video games such as DLC Quest[8] and The Angry Video Game Nerd Adventures.[9]
