Gaius Poppaeus Sabinus was a Roman statesman who served as Consul in 9 and as Governor of Moesia from 12 to 35.
Consulship
Gaius Poppaeus Sabinus was elected to the consulship, with Quintus Sulpicius Camerinus, in the year 9. The Lex Papia Poppaea was passed during his consulship. The law meant to strengthen and encourage marriage.[1] Additionally, during his consulship, Vespasian was born.[2]
Governorship
From 15 until his death in 35, he served as Governor of Moesia.[3] He enjoyed the friendship of the Emperors Augustus and Tiberius.[4]
Military triumph
During the reign of Tiberius as Emperor of the Roman Empire, Gaius Poppaeus Sabinus ended a revolt in Thrace in 26.[5] Consequently, he was awarded a honorary triumph.[6]
Family and death
Gaius Poppaeus Sabinus died in late December of 35. He is believed to have died of from natural causes. He is the father of Poppaea Sabina the Elder and maternal grandfather of Poppaea Sabina the Younger.[7][8]
