Gabby La La, is a vocalist and multi-instrumentalist (including sitar, ukulele, accordion, theremin and toy piano), signed to Prawn Song Records. Her music is self described as "fun, unique, crazy (and) kooky". La La's eccentric debut album, Be Careful What You Wish For..., is a collaboration with Les Claypool that though "peculiar... reveals gems of pop merriment."[1]
Gabby La La is primarily a solo artist but at times she has been a member of Weapon of Choice and currently is a member of Les Claypool's Fancy Band.
Biography and career
Gabby La La released her first solo album entitled Be Careful What You Wish For... on Les Claypool's Prawnsong Records in 2005. She was the second non-Primus act to be signed to the label. This album featured Gabby on sitar, ukulele, accordion, theremin and vocals and Les Claypool on bass, drums and percussion. The two produced the album at Rancho Relaxo Studios, beginning with Gabby La La's concepts and lyrics.
To promote the album, La La and Claypool performed at Bonnaroo Music Festival, All Good Music Festival, Wakarusa Music and Camping Festival, Joe's Pub in New York City, and the Jammy Award's at Madison Square Garden. La La also toured for several years as an official member of Les Claypool's Fancy Band.
La La got her true start at the age of five when she began studying piano. She later adopted the habit of switching instrument on a whim which led to her accumulation of instruments and musical skill. Just after commencing High School, La La began studying Sitar and Voice with musical genius and legend, Ali Akbar Khan at his college in San Rafael. She found her natural talent with the sitar and also a teacher who believed in her potential as a musician. After graduating from High School, La La went on to receive a BFA in Sitar Performance from The California Institute of the Arts. Before completing the program, La La spent 4 months studying with one of Akbar's senior students, Partho Chatterjee, in Calcutta India. After nearly 10 years of study, La La started to write her own music inspired by the creativity at CalArts. This urge to create has led to many projects and collaborations over the years and she her music continues to flow effortlessly through her.
Gabby La La has performed at such famous venues as The Fillmore-SF, The Warfield-SF, House of Blues nationwide, Roseland-NYC, The Avalon Ballroom-Boston, The Electric Factory-Philadelphia. In 2010, La La was the featured artist at The Interzone Festival in Serbia. She has toured and performance with such notable groups as Snoop Dogg, Macy Gray, Morcheeba, Fishbone, The Coup, Marco Benevento, Bob Weir, Les Claypool, Primus, Particle, The Trachtenburg Family Slideshow Players, Medusa, Weapon of Choice, The Sippy Cups, and her own projects Kit'N'Tenders, Gabby La La and The Mushroom People, and Snow Angel.
