Their name's origin is from the acronym GOP, which means "Gorodskoye Obshchezhitiye Proletariata" (rus. "Городское Общежитие Пролетариата", approximate translation is "The City Communal Apartments of the Lumpenproletariat"; in these place, in Petrograd, after the October Revolution, were situated the Apartments of lumpen-proletariat; these apartments were given to that people by the Soviet government, in exchange for not to riot and rebel).
