Hans Gösta Gustaf Ekman (born 28 July 1939) is a Swedish actor, comedian, and director.

Biography

Gösta Ekman was born in Stockholm. He started his career in theatre but has also appeared in several Swedish films, including the Jönssonligan series. Although most famous for his comedic works, especially for his collaboration with the comic duo Hasseåtage on stage and in films (where he often played the leading parts), he has also participated in different genres, including a series of drama/police films where he played the famous Swedish fictional policeman Martin Beck.

Gösta Ekman is the third generation in a family line of prominent Swedish actors starting with his paternal grandfather, also named Gösta Ekman (senior), and then his father Hasse Ekman, a successful film director and actor. The "Ekman theatre family" also include his brothers Stefan Ekman and Mikael Ekman (stage director), and his niece, Sanna Ekman (actress).

He is sometimes credited as "Gösta Ekman Jr." to avoid being confused with his famous grandfather.

He is married to artist Marie-Louise Ekman (previously married as Marie-Louise De Geer Bergenstråhle, née Fuchs). He was married in the 1960s to Fatima Ekman (née Gerhard).

Ekman officially retired from stage and acting work in 2003, although he played leading parts in his wife, Marie-Louise Ekman's, two films, Asta Nilssons sällskap (2005) och Pingvinresan (2005). In 2007, he directed the play Gäckanden for the Swedish Royal Dramatic Theatre (Kungliga Dramatiska Teatern) in Stockholm, so if he really is retired is a confusing question. Gösta Ekman won the Swedish film award Guldbaggen in 1993 for his role as policeman Martin Beck in the Guldbagge-winning film Mannen på balkongen, based on the novel by Sjöwall and Wahlöö from 1967. Ekman also won the special award Hedersguldbaggen (Honorable Guldbagge) in 2008 for his services for the Swedish film and theatre industry.
