The Glasgow and South Western Railway (G&SWR) 'Austrian Goods' is a class of 2-6-0 (mogul) steam locomotive designed by Peter Drummond. 11 were built in 1915 by the North British Locomotive Company at its Queens Park works. Originally built as class 403, they became class 33 in 1916 and then class 51 in 1919. The first, 17824, was withdrawn in 1935 and the final one was 17829 in 1947, at which point it was the last Glasgow and South Western tender locomotive still in service. All were scrapped. A photo of the loco appears in David L. Smith's Book "Locomotives of the Glasgow & South Western Railway" page 126.
Nickname
These mixed-traffic locomotives were given the nickname Austrian Goods. The nickname was acquired because it was thought that the engines were built from materials that NBL had gathered for a contract for Austria which was cancelled when World War I broke out. However, according to David L. Smith (1976:126), there is no evidence for any such contract.
