Frozen: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack is the soundtrack to 2013 Disney animated film, Frozen. The soundtrack features ten original songs written and composed by Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez, and twenty-two score pieces composed by Christophe Beck. It features the song "Let It Go" (film version performed by Idina Menzel; single version performed by Demi Lovato), which has received critical acclaim, including nominations for a Golden Globe Award for Best Original Song and a Critics' Choice Award for Best Song.[2][3]

Two editions of the soundtrack were released by Walt Disney Records on November 25, 2013; a single-disc and a two-disc digipak deluxe edition (containing original demo recordings of songs and score compositions, unused outtake recordings, and instrumental versions of the film's main songs).[4] On October 21, 2013, the soundtrack's lead single, a cover of "Let It Go" by Demi Lovato was released.[5] Subsequent releases have been accompanied by foreign language translations of "Let It Go".

The album received widespread critical acclaim by music critics and debuted at No. 18 on the Billboard 200 chart.[6] As of February 5, 2014, the soundtrack has sold 863,000 copies in the US and has topped the Billboard album chart four weeks.[7] The album was certified Gold by the Recording Industry Association of America,[8] and peaked at No. 1 on the aforementioned chart, becoming the fourth soundtrack album from an animated film to reach that milestone.[9]

Commercial performance

The soundtrack for Frozen debuted at #18 on the US Billboard 200, becoming the highest charted soundtrack for an animated film since the 2006 film Cars.[20] The soundtrack moved up to #10 becoming only the tenth soundtrack from an animated film to reach the top 10.[21] The soundtrack later moved up to #4, which is the highest position for an animated film soundtrack since Disney's own Pocahontas in 1995.[22]

The album was the fifth best-selling soundtrack album in 2013 in the US with 338,000 copies sold for the year.[23]

As of January 7, 2014, the soundtrack has had four consecutive weeks on top of Billboard Top Soundtracks.[24] It also topped the iTunes chart at No. 1 for album sales with over 165,000 copies sold,[25][26] as well as reaching No. 1 on the Billboard 200 in the week ending January 5, 2014, surpassing Beyoncé's self-titled album to become the fourth animated film soundtrack in history to reach this position.[27] It remained at number one for a second consecutive week, becoming the first theatrical film soundtrack to stay at No. 1 for multiple weeks since Dreamgirls spent two weeks at No. 1 in early 2007. The last animated film to spend more than one week at No. 1 was Disney's The Lion King, which placed for 10 nonconsecutive weeks in 1994 and 1995.[28] Spending four nonconsecutive weeks at number one, Frozen is the first theatrical film soundtrack to spend at least four weeks at No. 1 since Bad Boys II, which reigned for four weeks in August 2003.[29] It has sold 863,000 copies in the US as of February 2014.[29]
