Frederick Tuta (1269 16 August 1291) was a member of the House of Wettin. He was Margrave of Landsburg from 1285 until his death. From 1288 until his death, he was also Margrave of Lusatia and regent of Meissen.

The origin and meaning of his nickname Tuta are unclear and were not recorded. It possibly means "the stammerer".

Life

Frederick was the son of Margrave Theodoric of Landsberg. When his father died in 1285, he and his brothers divided the inheritance and he received the Landgraviate of Landsberg. When his brother Henry the Illustuous died in 1288, he also inherited the Margraviate of Lausitz. However, Henry's sons Albert II, Frederick the Bitten and Theodoric IV disputed this inheritace. In 1289, he purchased a part of Meissen and the territory of Frederick Clem.

Frederick Tuta died on 16 August 1291, aged 22, at Hirschstein Castle, due to eating poisoned cherries. As he did not have a male heir, his possessions where divided after his death. His nephews Theodoric and Frederick took Lusatia; Landsberg was sold to the Ascanian Margraves of Brandenburg.

Marriage and issue

Frederick married Catherine (d. 1310), the daughter of Henry XIII, Duke of Bavaria. They had one daughter, Elisabeth.
