Frederick David "Freddie" Sears (born 27 November 1989) is an English footballer who plays as a forward for Colchester United. He has represented England at under-21 level.[3]
Background
Sears was born in Hornchurch, Havering, London. He attended Hacton Primary school and was signed by West Ham United Academy at the age of eleven. He attended Sanders Draper School playing for the successful school football team winning every cup available including the ESFA Under 13 National Cup played at Anfield beating Aylestone High School 5–1 with Sears scoring a hat-trick.
Club career
West Ham United
Sears joined the club as a schoolboy at the age of eleven. After beginning the 2006–07 campaign as a regular substitute for the under-18s he soon forced his way into contention with his goals earning him a starting berth. His chances of realising his hopes took a major leap forward in the 2007–08 campaign with a prolific run for the under-18s – including a hat-trick against Millwall in October 2007.
After a run of 20 goals in 15 games, Sears made the jump from youth to reserve squad in the 2007–08 season and impressed youth team coach Tony Carr sufficiently for Carr to predict that a first team appearance was a possibility.[4] Sears has also been called up for England under-19 squad and made his international debut in England's 4–0 win over Belarus on 11 September 2007.[5]
Sears had scored 25 goals in 24 matches for the youths and reserves in the 2007–08 campaign, and had just signed a new deal with the club before he played his debut game for West Ham United against Blackburn Rovers in the Premier League on 15 March 2008, aged 18. With both sides deadlocked at 1–1, he came on for Nolberto Solano in the 75th minute and scored the winner, also his debut goal, just five minutes and 16 seconds into his first team career, heading in the rebound from his first attempt at goal.[6][7]
The 2008–09 season began with Sears in the reserves. He was joint top scorer with five goals in the 2008-09 Premier Reserve League. Gianfranco Zola, impressed with the youngster, decided to loan him out to further his development and rewarded him with a new five-year contract in November 2008.[8][9]
In June 2009, Sears joined West Ham's London neighbours Crystal Palace on loan for the 2009–10 season. He rejected moves to Queens Park Rangers, Peterborough United and Sheffield Wednesday.[10] Sears appeared to have scored his first goal for Crystal Palace on 15 August 2009 against Bristol City, but the ball bounced off the stanchion below the net and came back out. Referee, Rob Shoebridge then caused even more controversy by failing to spot the "goal" and thus not awarding it to the Eagles.[11] The incident caused a public verbal disagreement between Palace manager Neil Warnock and the FA over whether Sears should be awarded the goal and the use of video replays as evidence.[12][13] On 29 December 2009, Sears was recalled by West Ham due to injuries to Carlton Cole, Luis Boa Morte, and Zavon Hines plus suspension to Guillermo Franco. He played nineteen times in all competitions for Palace without scoring.[14]
On 11 February 2010, Sears signed on loan at Coventry City for the rest of the season.[15] Sears returned to West Ham for the start of the 2010–11 season but found his playing opportunities limited, playing only twice in their first ten games.[16] On 19 October 2010, he joined Scunthorpe United on a one-month loan,[17] making his debut the same day in a 3–2 away win against Preston North End.[18] In November, the loan was extended until 3 January 2011.[19]
On 21 December 2010, Sears was recalled by West Ham from his loan.[20] Sears scored his second senior goal for West Ham on New Year's Day 2011 against Wolverhampton Wanderers.[21] Sears went on to score his third senior goal for the Hammers when he struck the fifth goal against Burnley in West Ham's 5–1 FA Cup win on 21 February.[22]
On 17 February 2012, he joined League One side Colchester United on a one-month loan deal.[23] In March 2012 his loan was extended until the end of the 2011–12 season.[24] Sears scored his first goal for over a year, and his first for Colchester, on 6 April 2012 with a penalty in a 1–1 home draw against Hartlepool United. He scored his second and final goal for the U's in their last home game of the season against Tranmere Rovers. He made 11 first team appearances for Colchester and scored 2 goals during his loan.[25]
In June 2012, Sears left West Ham by mutual consent. He had made 58 appearances in all competitions scoring three goals.[26]
Colchester United
On 4 July 2012, Sears signed a three-year contract with Colchester United after being released by West Ham.[27] He made his full debut for the Essex side in a 0–0 draw with Preston North End on 18 August 2012.[28] He scored his first full-time goal for Colchester in a 2–1 Football League Trophy defeat to Northampton Town on 9 October 2012,[29] and scored his first league goal in a 3–2 defeat at Crewe Alexandra on 10 November 2012.[30] In the following game, Sears scored his second league goal of the 2012–13 season in a 2–0 win over Bury on 17 November 2012.[31]
During his first season with the club, Sears claimed that "this is the first time in a long while I've really been enjoying it [playing]" after scoring four goals in five games and making regular appearances in the first-team.[32] A short time after, he suffered a knee injury that kept him out for seven games,[33] making his return as a substitute in a 3–1 defeat to Notts County on 13 April as Colchester battled for League One survival.[34]
Sears opened his scoring account for the 2013–14 season in a 1–1 draw with Sheffield United at Bramall Lane on 17 August[35] and followed this up by scoring an equaliser in another 1–1 draw with Carlisle United at home six days later.[36] Having recovered from a hamstring injury after a period of time out, Sears was selected to face Preston on 23 November, but broke down after just 28 minutes in that game.[37] The recurrence of that injury kept him out of the side until 11 January 2014, where he featured as a late substitute in a 3–0 victory over Gillingham. He scored with the last kick of the game after five minutes of injury time to bring his goal count to five for the season.[38]
International career
Sears had represented England at various youth levels prior to being called up for the under-21 squad. He played for the under-19s at the 2008 European Championships alongside then teammate James Tomkins. Stuart Pearce named him in the squad list for the August 2009 friendly against the Netherlands.[3] The nineteen-year-old made his debut in the 0–0 draw with the Jong Oranje, coming on as a second-half substitute for fellow West Ham player Junior Stanislas.[39][40]
