Frank 'The Wise Guy' Buglioni (born 18 April 1989) is an unbeaten British super-middleweight professional boxer from England and currently holder of the WBO European Super Middleweight belt. Buglioni is trained by Mark Tibbs and promoted by Frank Warren. Buglioni is ranked number 11 in the United Kingdom and 97 in the World.

Buglioni was favoured in the Great Britain Olympic team but he turned professional in November 2011, as he felt his style and technique suited the professional field more. Buglioni joined forces with the East London trainers Jimmy and Mark Tibbs,[2] a father-son partnership that has produced numerous domestic, European and world champions.[3]

Amateur career

Buglioni has always been an avid sportsman competing in swimming, athletics, tennis and football. Aged 13 he took up boxing in an attempt to further increase his fitness, strength and tenacity.[4]

It quickly became apparent that Buglioni had a natural talent in the ring. His ability and love for his newfound sport led to leaving the footballing world behind him in order to pursue what was to be an illustrious amateur career.[5]

At the age of 14 Buglioni joined the Waltham Forest Amateur Boxing Club and after 4 fights and 4 wins it was decided that he would move on to train at the Repton Boxing Club in Bethnal Green under the tutelage of head coach Tony Burns. Repton Boxing Club's having previous trained boxers such as Audley Harrison, Darren Barker, Mark Baker, Courtney Fry, Maurice Hope & Andrew Lowe. The gym itself has featured widely on TV, film and print as a special gym for special talent.[6]

Buglioni went on to have 70 amateur fights, winning 60 and losing 10, with over 50% of the amateur fights won by KO.[7]

He won 2 national titles and also picked up various medals in international tournaments, most notable of which a silver medal against the World No.1 Vijender Singh in the Commonwealth Federations Tournament in Delhi 2010.[8]

Professional career

Now based in Enfield, London, Buglioni chose to turn professional in November 2011. His first professional fight was at the Wembley Arena. Buglioni knocked out Sabie Montieth in the first round. A left hook followed by a right hand, led to what would be Montieth's first ever knock down. Robert Williams called a halt to the contest.[9]

Just 13 days later, Buglioni fought his second professional fight. This was Buglioni's first appearance at York Hall as a professional. Buglioni stopped his man in the 1st round; two knock downs in quick succession was enough for referee Ken Curtis to end the competition and award Buglioni another 1st round victory.

Buglioni's next professional fight was in February 2012 against Ryan Clark. This was the first time in his professional career Buglioni had not dispatched his man in the first round but was awarded the unanimous victory on points.

Buglioni's 4th professional fight was in April 2012 against Daniel Borisov, rated No.2 in Bulgaria at the Royal Albert Hall. Borisov was knocked down three times inside the first round by the punchy Londoner and referee Richard James Davies awarded the TKO win to Buglioni.

Buglioni's 5th professional fight against Jody Meikle. Meikle suffered a deep laceration to his left eye from an over hand right of Buglioni. Buglioni was awarded the victory by unanimous decision.

Buglioni's 6th professional fight was against Joe Rea. Buglioni knocked Rea down twice in the first round. Buglioni secured his 6th victory and 4th knockout of his career when referee Jeff Hinds decided that Rea could no longer continue the fight after he was knocked down for a third time one minute into the second round.

Buglioni's 7th professional fight was against Ciaran Healy in December 2012 at the ExCeL Arena. The 2nd round of the fight saw Healy hit the canvas as Buglioni landed a right uppercut to the body followed by a left hook to the head. Healy beat the count and went on to survive the remaining 90 seconds of the round, he did not come out for the 3rd round, instead he remained seated in his corner indicating a retirement from the fight. It was later announced that Healy suffered an injury to his lower back.

April 2013 saw Buglioni enter the ring for his first 8 rounder against Darren McKenna who had 2 wins to his name, both coming by knockout. In the 2nd round Buglioni landing a 2 punch combination on the ribs of McKenna. McKenna survived and then came back with his own power punches. In the third round, Buglioni knocked McKenna down and he failed to beat Bob Williams count. Buglioni had the name 'Norgrove' stitched into the back of the elasticated belt for his shorts as a mark of respect for a fellow boxer, Michael Norgrove who died in the ring a few weeks prior to this fight. Buglioni later announced that the win was dedicated to Norgrove.

Buglioni's 9th professional fight was against Lithuanian, Kirill Psonko. This fight was Buglioni's second 8 rounder and in contrast to his previous 8 rounder, this bout went the distance. It was the first time Buglioni had gone past 6 rounds in his professional career. Psonko was a real step up of opposition for Buglioni, previously being in the ring with George Groves and Chris Eubank Jr. Buglioni applied pressure on Psonko did not look out of his depth at any point during the fight. Buglioni went on to take the points victory by a clear margin.

September 2013 was Buglioni's 10th professional fight scheduled for 10 rounds. It was against the 'Blade' Broislav Kubin at the Copper Box in London's Olympic Park. Buglioni was desperate to improve on his last performance which saw him get a valuable 8 rounds worth of experience and big improvements could be seen straight away. Buglioni used his reach advantage to good effect, setting himself up with the jab waiting for openings in Kubin's high guard defense. It was noticeable that Buglioni was much calmer and patient with his attacks and seemed very confident in ducking and blocking any rare attack coming back from Kubin. Remaining calm throughout, Buglioni started to pick off Kubin in the 2nd round and rocked him with a hook early on. Kubin hit the canvas when Buglioni threw a short right to the head that caught Kubin walking in. Although Kubin beat the count, referee Phil Edwards deemed him in no position to carry on giving Buglioni his 7th KO in 10 fights.

Attire: Buglioni wears either blue, white or black 'classic style' shorts. The shorter, more vintage style shorts are a tribute to the old style of boxing which Buglioni admires.

As an amateur, Buglioni was always a forward thinking fighter, consistently looking for, and often finding that elusive knock out punch. However, since turning pro and joining forces with Jimmy & Mark Tibbs, Buglioni has fine tuned his style, becoming an effective and ferocious counter puncher. He still holds true to coming forward and taking the fight to his opponent but now, Buglioni's main focuses are on head movement, blocking and slipping and moving in and out, before and after a punch.[10]

Personal life

Buglioni comes from an Anglo-Italian family background and is the 3rd of 4 children. He grew up in Enfield, London where he still lives and often trains.

After achieving his International Baccalaureate Diploma from Highlands School Sixth Form Buglioni attended Westminster University choosing to study Building Surveying. He chose to put his education on hold when he was selected for the Team GB Olympic team. Buglioni has stated he would like to go back and complete his degree.[11]

Buglioni's boxing heroes are Oscar De La Hoya and Arturo 'Thunder' Gatti.[12]

Buglioni's motto is "The harder I train, the luckier I get".[13]

Before Buglioni took boxing up full-time, he worked as a building surveyor for his fathers company. Outside of the ring, Buglioni enjoys spending his free time with friends and family and enjoys film, music and other sports.

Buglioni supports London football team Chelsea.[14]

Media

On 19 April 2012, an article was published by Colin Hart in the Sun Newspaper stating that Buglioni has what it takes to go all the way to the top on the boxing stage. Hart comments positively on Buglioni's rapidly growing fan base and states that he is an exciting character to watch.[15]

On 22 August 2012, Buglioni announced via his Twitter page that he would feature in the September's edition of Loaded. He was featured in a 6 page spread in the magazine, including many photo shots and exclusive interviews with Buglioni himself and his father, Ralph.

On 19 September 2012, a music video by Bleech called "Break My Nose" was released starring Buglioni. He is seen entering the ring, trading punches and scoring a k.o victory in the fight set up solely for the video itself.[16]

On 16 April 2013, an interview with Buglioni featured on ITV News London at 6pm, talking about his career so far, life outside of the ring and also his future boxing plans.[17]

On 2 April 2013, a one hour long documentary about Buglioni was broadcast on Trace Sports, Sky channel 442.
