Folgefonna Tunnel
The Folgefonna Tunnel (Norwegian: Folgefonntunnelen) is a 11,150 meters (36,580 ft) long road tunnel which connects Eitrheim and the head of Sørfjorden in Odda to the head of Maurangsfjorden in Kvinnherad, Norway, running under Folgefonna. The tunnel opened in 2001 and is Norway's third longest road tunnel. It reduced travel time from four hours to ten minutes on the section. It is part of National Road 551.
In year 2012 a extension was built, the 10,4 km long Jondal Tunnel. Using these tunnels and a ferry, the road distance between road E134 and Bergen is much shorter than before. Using this route Oslo-Bergen is shorter than E16 and less sensitive to snow storms in the winter (which is fairly long in the mountains) than route 7, the shortest route.
