Flint Hill School, founded in 1956, is a private, co-educational, college preparatory school, in Oakton, Virginia, in the United States. Its campus is located in the heart of Fairfax County close to the intersection of I-66 and Route 50.
Overview
The school has two campuses: one for the Lower/Middle School, and one for the Upper School. It enrolls about 1,100 students from Junior Kindergarten through Twelfth Grade who exhibit high standards of character, conduct and potential for achieving success in a demanding academic program. Small class size help foster Flint Hill's individual teacher-student relationships which are the foundation of its program. Lower and Middle School classes are no larger than 18. The Upper School's average class size is 12. Different learning styles are recognized and personalized attention given; special academic help is sometimes offered as long as the student is motivated and responds positively and diligently. Learning how to learn, through mastery of critical thinking, problem solving and writing skills, is given as much attention as mastery of subject matter.
Flint Hill's curriculum requires a traditional core of courses for graduation, carefully balanced with a stimulating mix of electives in order to prepare the student for the most exacting college programs. The school fosters each student's intellectual development, love of learning, and strength of character. Aesthetic awareness and creativity are cultivated through richly varied studies in the arts, music and drama; the athletic program encourages people and demands the best from all participants, not only in skill development but also sportsmanship, teamwork, self-discipline and leadership; and the experiential education program, which utilizes the resources of the surrounding region, fosters personal growth, hands-on learning, and respect for the natural world. The Flint Hill School student is encouraged to seek an understanding of diverse cultures and beliefs; to think globally, analytically and responsibly about complex world issues; and to respond locally through service to others.
Athletics
The school participates in the ISL (Independent School League) for girls sports and the MAC (Mid-Atlantic Athletic Conference) for boys sports.
