The flag of Cincinnati, is the municipal banner of the city of Cincinnati, Ohio, in the United States. The chosen design is the result of a winning entry in an 1895 contest and the flag was formally adopted in 1940.[1]
Symbolism
The blue waves represent the Ohio River that the city sits along. The red "C" in the center represents Cincinnati and a red buckeye leaf sits atop the letter to symbolize the State of Ohio. The center of the C features most of the Seal of Cincinnati. Included are the winged rod (commerce), serpents (wisdom), scales (justice), and a sword (authority and power). The phrase on the flag, "Juncta Juvant", is Latin for "Unity Assists".[2]
Vexillology
In a 2004 poll on the North American Vexillological Association website, Cincinnati’s flag was voted the 22nd best design among United States city flags, and the best city flag in Ohio.[3] [4]
