Fisher (surname)
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Fisher is an English surname in the English language. It is an occupational name from the Old English "fiscare," which means "fisherman", one who obtained his living by fishing. In Ireland it is the anglicized form of Gaelic Ó Bradáin ‘descendant of Bradán’, a personal name meaning ‘salmon’. The Gaelic name was sometimes translated into English as Salmon or Fisher. Also the Celtic name Mac an Iascair in Ireland or MacInesker in Scotland was also translated to Fisher. It is numerous throughout the four Provinces, especially Ulster (County Antrim), where it was introduced from England centuries ago.
