Fincastle is a 6th-class city in eastern Jefferson County, Kentucky, in the United States. The population was 825 at the 2000 census.
History
Fincastle was incorporated on January 25, 1974. The name probably refers to the Virginia county that eventually became the modern state of Kentucky. That county was named for the city of Fincastle, itself named for Lord Fincastle.
Geography
Fincastle is located at 38°18′23″N 85°32′22″W / 38.30639°N 85.53944°W (38.306419, -85.539446)[1].
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 0.2 square miles (0.52 km2), all of it land.
Demographics
As of the census[2] of 2000, there were 825 people, 295 households, and 243 families residing in the city. The population density was 3,890.9 people per square mile (1,516.8/km²). There were 301 housing units at an average density of 1,419.6 per square mile (553.4/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 62.18% White, 30.42% Black or African American, 0.61% Native American, 2.18% Asian, 0.73% from other races, and 3.88% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.21% of the population.
There were 295 households out of which 46.1% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 67.1% were married couples living together, 12.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 17.6% were non-families. 13.9% of all households were made up of individuals and 2.0% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.80 and the average family size was 3.11.
In the city the population was spread out with 30.4% under the age of 18, 5.3% from 18 to 24, 33.9% from 25 to 44, 25.7% from 45 to 64, and 4.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 34 years. For every 100 females there were 102.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 92.6 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $66,477, and the median income for a family was $66,250. Males had a median income of $46,389 versus $30,446 for females. The per capita income for the city was $27,058. About 3.9% of families and 4.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 5.2% of those under age 18 and 10.2% of those age 65 or over.
Government
Fincastle is classified as a Sixth Class city. The city has a legislative body composed of a Mayor and four Commissioners.
The city is presided over by Mayor Jacques Byrd, who was elected Mayor in the 2010 General Election. Aaron Cunningham, Mary Godfrey, Julie Groves, and Jeffrey Huff serve as City Commissioners. The City Clerk is Jean Reid. Nathan Lindemyer serves as Treasurer, and the City Attorney is Michael Lawrence.
