Film Unit is a professional quality independent cinema and Film society located within the University of Sheffield Union of Students and run entirely by volunteers, usually members of the University of Sheffield, although occasionally Alumni of the university (usually members of Film Unit as students) and Sheffield Hallam University students also make up committee and house staff. The cinema shows over 100 films a year.

It is classed within the Union as a Working Committee, as it provides a service to all students as well as non-students, who are also very welcome.

Film Unit can seat up to 390 people per screening and have a 7.8m by 3.3m screen. Tickets cost only £2.50 making Film Unit larger, bigger and cheaper that many other cinemas in Sheffield.

History

Film Unit joined the BFFS in 1950,[1] following its establishment in 1949.[citation needed] It also holds the copyright of a title shot in 1960, held in the University's archives.[2] There is also a title shot in 1965 by "SUSU Film Society/Film Unit".

Film Unit used to show films in the Graves Building, part of the Union building. However, in 1996 a new auditorium was opened, and became the new home of Film Unit;[3] it is also used as a lecture theatre.

Over the past, the members have been formed primarily from members of USIT, which folded in 2003.[4]

Projectors

Film Unit currently has two fully functioning projectors, and is almost unique in the cinematic world as it still has the capability of showing traditional 35mm films. The two projectors Film Unit uses are a digital Christie CP2210 and a 35mm Victoria 5000.

Film Unit projectionists have the unique opportunity to be trained and experience the running of a fully functioning cinema in both digital and 35mm. Although there are fewer and fewer films today that are produced on 35mm, specifically newer releases, being able to show films in 35mm gives Film Unit the unique ability to show traditional and older films that will rarely make an appearance on the “Big Screen” again.

There will be new opportunities for students to get involved with “projing” and Film Unit at the start of each academic year.
