The FilmArtFestival Mecklenburg-Pomerania in Schwerin (German: filmkunstfest Mecklenburg-Vorpommern), founded in 1991 – just after the fall of the wall – is today one of East Germany's largest film festivals with more than 17,000 visitors. It has a competition for feature film, documentary film and short film to be produced or co-produced in Germany, Austria or Switzerland. The main prize is the Flying Ox (German: Fliegender Ochse), a hint to the armorial bearings of the State of Mecklenburg, the Taurus. The main prize is endowed with 10.000 € by the Ministry of Education, Science and Culture Mecklenburg-Pomerania.

The festival takes place usually in the first week of May.

Prize of Honour

Since 2002 the Prize of Honour, the Golden Ox (German: Goldener Ochse) is given to an honour guest of the festival for special merits for the German film.
