Felipe Alves França da Silva (born May 14, 1987 in Suzano, São Paulo) is a breaststroke swimmer from Brazil, who competed for his country at the 2008 Olympics.[1]

He started in Esporte Clube União Suzano, at three years old. At age 13, he was champion in Brazilian Children category II. After passing through the academy Gustavo Borges in Curitiba, France moved to the capital, São Paulo, and entered the Esporte Clube Pinheiros.[2]

International career

2008

In 2008, he was in 2008 FINA World Swimming Championships (25 m), in the city of Manchester in April, where he finished 6th in the 4×100-metre medley [3] 12th in 100-metre breaststroke [4] and 13th in 50-metre breaststroke.[5]

Later, in May, Felipe França obtained the index to 2008 Summer Olympics at 100-metre breaststroke, with a time of 1:01.17, getting the second Brazil vacancy.[6][7] However, he failed to pass heats.[8] He finished in 22nd place in the 100-metre breaststroke, and participating in the 4×100-metre medley relay, got the 14th place.[9]

2009

At the 2009 Brazilian Championships (Maria Lenk Trophy) he became the first swimmer to swim under 27-seconds in the long-course 50-metre breaststroke, winning the event with the World Record of 26.89 seconds.[10][11]

On July 10, 2009, participating in the 2009 Summer Universiade in Belgrade, Serbia, won the silver medal in the 50-metre breaststroke.[12]

In the 2009 World Aquatics Championships, at Rome, after a tough competition, Felipe França won the silver, doing 26.76 seconds mark, Americas record. The gold went to South African Cameron van der Burgh, which became the new world record holder, with 26.67 seconds.[13]

2010

At the 2010 Pan Pacific Swimming Championships in Irvine, California, Felipe won gold in the proof of 50-metre breaststroke.[14]

In December, at the 2010 FINA World Swimming Championships (25 m) in Dubai, Felipe won gold in the 50-metre breaststroke, beating the world record holder Cameron van der Burgh with a time of 25.95 seconds (championship record), and the bronze in the 100-metre breaststroke with a time of 57.39 seconds.[15] Together with César Cielo, Guilherme Guido and Kaio Almeida, hit the South American record of 4×100-metre medley with 3:23.12 time, getting the bronze medal.[16]

2011

In July 2011, during the 2011 World Aquatics Championships in Shanghai, França won the gold medal in the 50-metre breaststroke, again surpassing the world record holder Cameron van der Burgh, with a time of 27.01 seconds.[17]

In 2011 Pan American Games, Felipe won gold in the 100-metre breaststroke[18] and in the 4×100-metre medley[19]

2012

In April 2012, participating in the Maria Lenk Trophy in Rio de Janeiro, and in order to ensure the index for the Olympic Games London 2012 and also to obtain an Olympic medal in the 100-metre breaststroke, Felipe obtained 59.63 seconds in heats.[20] In 50-metre breaststroke, did the best time in the world at this year, 26.87 seconds, near his Americas record, 26.76 seconds.[21]

It created an expectation that Felipe would have a chance to medal in the 100-metre breaststroke in 2012 Summer Olympics in London, due to this result . But in the Olympics, could not swim below the 1 minute, finishing in 12th place.[22] The 59.63 seconds mark would give him 5th place in the Olympic final, where the bronze was obtained with 59.49 seconds. The biggest Felipe's rival, Cameron Van der Burgh, won Olympic gold and broke world record at 100-metre breaststroke.[23] He also participated in the 4×100-metre medley, finishing in 15th place.[24]
