Farnern

Farnern is a municipality in the Oberaargau administrative district in the canton of Bern in Switzerland.

History

Farnern is first mentioned in 1329 as Varnerron.[3]

Geography

Farnern has an area, as of 2009, of 3.69 km2 (1.42 sq mi). Of this area, 2.39 km2 (0.92 sq mi) or 64.8% is used for agricultural purposes, while 1.1 km2 (0.42 sq mi) or 29.8% is forested. Of the rest of the land, 0.16 km2 (0.062 sq mi) or 4.3% is settled (buildings or roads).[4]

Of the built up area, housing and buildings made up 2.4% and transportation infrastructure made up 1.9%. 26.0% of the total land area is heavily forested and 3.8% is covered with orchards or small clusters of trees. Of the agricultural land, 9.2% is used for growing crops and 25.5% is pastures, while 2.2% is used for orchards or vine crops and 27.9% is used for alpine pastures.[4]

The municipality is located on a terrace on the southern slope of the Jura Mountains and includes the village of Farnern and scattered farm houses.

Demographics

Farnern has a population (as of 31 December 2012) of 207.[1] As of 2007, 3.4% of the population was made up of foreign nationals. Over the last 10 years the population has decreased at a rate of -5.9%. Most of the population (as of 2000) speaks German (98.6%), with most of the rest speaking French ( 0.9%).

In the 2007 election the most popular party was the SVP which received 52.5% of the vote. The next three most popular parties were the SPS (16.4%), the Green Party (10%) and the FDP (8.3%).

The age distribution of the population (as of 2000) is children and teenagers (0–19 years old) make up 23.1% of the population, while adults (20–64 years old) make up 59.3% and seniors (over 64 years old) make up 17.6%. The entire Swiss population is generally well educated. In Farnern about 79.4% of the population (between age 25-64) have completed either non-mandatory upper secondary education or additional higher education (either university or a Fachhochschule).

Farnern has an unemployment rate of 0.47%. As of 2005, there were 32 people employed in the primary economic sector and about 11 businesses involved in this sector. 3 people are employed in the secondary sector and there are 1 business in this sector. 25 people are employed in the tertiary sector, with 9 businesses in this sector.[5] The historical population is given in the following table:[3]
