History
The company originated in 1892 when a peddler by the name of Edmund Fairchild took over a failing newspaper that gave exclusive coverage to the men's clothing business. It was named Daily Trade Record (before turning into Daily News Record and eventually DNR) and included a small feature about women's wear. In July 1910, this feature was split from the paper and given its own publication that today is Women's Wear Daily. Other past publications in the Fairchild stable have included 'Home Furnishings Daily, Golf Pro Merchandising, Supermarket News, Electronic News, Metalworking News, Jane and W.
In 1968, the company - then named Fairchild Publications - was purchased by Capital Cities Communications. In a 1996 merger, Fairchild Publications became part of The Walt Disney Company, but it was subsequently sold in 1999 to Advance Publications, the parent company of Condé Nast Publications. Fairchild’s consumer magazines, Jane and W, were eventually moved to Condé Nast, and the company sold its non-fashion trade magazines. In 2005, Advance Publications folded Fairchild Publications into the umbrella of Conde Nast Publications, and the company was subsequently rebranded as Fairchild Fashion Group. In 2008, DNR closed.
In 2010, Fairchild launched Menswear and expanded its consumer footprint with the addition of Style.com. In 2011, Fairchild Fashion Group rebranded to Fairchild Fashion Media in order to reflect the expanding portfolio of media brands, including substantial digital offerings. In October of that year, the company launched Style.com/Print, a glossy magazine entirely dedicated to giving fashion obsessives both a first view and a collectible distillation of a full collections season. In 2012, FFM made further changes by selling Fairchild Books to Bloomsbury Publishing and soon after, acquiring NowManifest, fashion blog aggregator featuring content from the fashion blogosphere.
