Named for Fairbanks was named after Sgt. Nathan Fairbanks, who was killed in September 1812, when his platoon of 12 soldiers was ambushed by a group of Indians just outside of the town.

Geography

Community

A community center has been formed from a public school that closed in 1990. Sporting events hosted there include dodgeball, basketball, and softball.

Public schooling for area residents is provided by the Sullivan County School District. There is an elementary school in Farmerburg; secondary education is provided in nearby schools.

Community fire protection is provided by a volunteer fire department. The Fairbanks Post Office is located on Main Street.

The area of Fairbanks is known for its hiking and fishing.
