Fahrni is a municipality in the administrative district of Thun in the canton of Bern in Switzerland.
History
Fahrni is first mentioned in 1299 as Varne.[3]
Geography
Fahrni has an area, as of 2009, of 6.67 km2 (2.58 sq mi). Of this area, 4.46 km2 (1.72 sq mi) or 66.9% is used for agricultural purposes, while 1.78 km2 (0.69 sq mi) or 26.7% is forested. Of the rest of the land, 0.34 km2 (0.13 sq mi) or 5.1% is settled (buildings or roads), 0.08 km2 (20 acres) or 1.2% is either rivers or lakes and 0.01 km2 (2.5 acres) or 0.1% is unproductive land.[4]
Of the built up area, housing and buildings made up 3.4% and transportation infrastructure made up 1.3%. 25.6% of the total land area is heavily forested. Of the agricultural land, 23.4% is used for growing crops and 40.8% is pastures, while 2.7% is used for orchards or vine crops. All the water in the municipality is in rivers and streams.[4]
The municipality is located in the hills between the Zulg river and Rotachental. It includes the village known as Dörfli and the hamlets of Rachholtern, Lueg, Äschlisbühl, Bach and Embergboden as well as scattered individual farm houses.
Demographics
Fahrni has a population (as of 31 December 2012) of 796.[1] As of 2007, 1.3% of the population was made up of foreign nationals. Over the last 10 years the population has grown at a rate of 8.3%. Most of the population (as of 2000) speaks German (97.6%), with Albanian being second most common ( 1.4%) and Italian being third ( 0.4%).
In the 2007 election the most popular party was the SVP which received 59% of the vote. The next three most popular parties were the SPS (13.1%), the Green Party (7.2%) and the local small left-wing parties (6.8%).
The age distribution of the population (as of 2000) is children and teenagers (0–19 years old) make up 25% of the population, while adults (20–64 years old) make up 58.2% and seniors (over 64 years old) make up 16.8%. The entire Swiss population is generally well educated. In Fahrni about 72.9% of the population (between age 25-64) have completed either non-mandatory upper secondary education or additional higher education (either university or a Fachhochschule).
Fahrni has an unemployment rate of 0.5%. As of 2005, there were 120 people employed in the primary economic sector and about 46 businesses involved in this sector. 35 people are employed in the secondary sector and there are 10 businesses in this sector. 31 people are employed in the tertiary sector, with 8 businesses in this sector.[5] The historical population is given in the following table:[3]
