The Express is a free daily newspaper, distributed in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area.
History and operations
With its first issue on August 5, 2003, the newspaper is published every weekday in a tabloid format and distributed at Washington Metro stations and other locations throughout the Washington metropolitan area. It is owned and printed by Jeff Bezos' Nash Holdings, the owner of The Washington Post.
Content
Although it has the same owner as The Washington Post, few of the hard-news stories are written by Post staff. Many stories and pictures come from the Associated Press, The Christian Science Monitor, Getty Images and other wire sources. The features and entertainment part of the newspaper uses a number of reporters. Their original stories are available on the washingtonpost.com website. The newspaper is financed solely by advertising.
The newspaper does not have an opinion section or letters to the editor, and has traditionally never taken a political stance, unlike other newspapers in the local market, including Politico, The Washington Examiner, The Washington Post, The Washington Times, each of which have an opinion section.
Layout and mobile applications
The newspaper launched a redesign on November 30, 2009, which emphasized a more magazine-style front page, along with a daily cover story.
In August 2010, the newspaper launched a mobile application, DC Rider, which is available for iOS devices (iPhone and iPod Touch) and Android devices.
